Project Update: Major Milestones Reached
We’re excited to share that our new Tauriko asphalt plant is now entering the final stages of construction, with commissioning set to begin shortly. It’s been a big month for the Acon team, and the progress on site marks a major step toward becoming fully operational.
What’s Happening on Site
The team has officially relocated from Te Puna to the new Tauriko offices, which are now fully in place and operational.
All major structural components have been completed, with only the ramp still to be finished. The electrical connections are 97% complete, and the gas train has been installed.
Arenma Tech began motor control connections this week, and the natural gas meter is being installed today. Work is also underway with Road Science to design asphalt mixes tailored to the new plant.
Structue lab is assessing the site’s earthquake and wind strength, confirming the robustness of all completed structures.
Commissioning and Next Steps
Commissioning preparations are now in full swing, focusing on testing, integrating, and fine-tuning all systems to ensure the plant operates safely and efficiently.
The Almix team will arrive in the final week of November to support with start-up and troubleshooting. In the meantime, our crews are completing final tasks around the burner commissioning and verifying mechanical and control systems.
Across the site, stockpile sheds are being built and will be completed within the week. The remaining pavement works and main gate installation are also progressing rapidly, bringing the site closer to completion.
Progress and Timeline
The project remains on track to be fully operational by the last week of November, a huge milestone for Acon and our wider whānau.
Regular inspections and coordination between contractors have helped keep work flowing smoothly as we move into the final stretch.
Once commissioning is complete, the plant will begin operations, supplying high-quality asphalt to support local infrastructure and road maintenance projects across the region.
Benefits for the Community
The new Tauriko asphalt plant represents a major investment in local capability, supporting road upgrades and maintenance throughout the Bay of Plenty and beyond.
It’s also created valuable employment opportunities across construction, electrical, and mechanical trades - strengthening our local workforce and community connections.
Throughout construction, environmental management has remained a key focus, with systems in place to manage materials, waste, and stormwater in line with our resource consent and sustainability goals.
As we move toward commissioning and start-up, we’re proud of how far the team has come and grateful for everyone’s continued support as we bring this exciting project to life.
